It was 1970, and Crane just finished his only semester at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Uncomfortable at the “hippie school,” he left to go on a Mormon mission to Uruguay. In the capital city of Montevideo he climbed on his apartment roof and started taking pictures of the skyline and — oops! — a sensitive military base next door. Arrested at bayonet point, he spent six hours in jail.
